Art Installation - River Score, Abstracted Hoisting

Firstly I looked at the processes that the mill created and how that affected the local area. The mill brought in grain from further afield and through several processes produced flour for the local area. This mill was therefore part of the local system, in which the local area relied on the mill and the mill relied on the area, a two way relationship.

Taking this relationship I decided to look at the local area through the eyes of the proceses that occur within the mill. These processes are Hoisting, Drying, Chaff Separation, Grinding, Flour Bolt Sifting and Flour Bagging.

This image shows a view of the all the "hoisting" processes that occur in the city along this section of the Water of Leith, for example stairs "hoist" people up from the river to the city.
